1919년 3월 6일 인천 최초 3.1운동 발상지인 인천공립보통학교에서 학생들의 주도로 시작된 독립운동은 1919년 3월 24일 황어장터에 모인 600여명과 함께 외쳤던 "대한독립만세!"의 함성을 시작으로 전국적으로 만세운동이 확산되는 계기를 마련하였기에 인천의 독립운동은 역사적으로 중요한 의미를 지니고 있다.
