알토 색소폰의 거장 빈센트 헤링과 테너 색소폰의 독보적인 존재 에릭 알렉산더는 오랜 시간 호흡을 맞추며 재즈 색소폰의 매력을 선보여 왔다. 특히, 이들이 함께 했던 미국 뉴욕의 Smoke 재즈 클럽 라이브 실황음반 'The Battle : Live at Smoke'(2005)는 하드밥의 정수를 제대로 선보이며 흔히 테너 색소폰 두대로 펼치던 색소폰 배틀을 서로 대비되는 알토와 테너 두 악기 음역대의 균형감으로, 보다 쉽고 직관적으로 들을 수 있는 연주로 관객을 사로잡았다. 색소폰 배틀에서 흔히 등장했던 테너 색소폰 두대의 연주가 아닌, 알토 색소폰과 테너 색소폰의 '듀오 배틀' 연주는 역사적으로 여러 '환상의 콤비'를 배출하였다.
